Diversity on Wall Street
J Robert Brown Jr. |
Friday, September 24, 2010 at 07:00AM As we discuss the issue of diversity, the WSJ has recently noted that women seem to be disappearing from Wall Street. As the Journal noted:
- young women are becoming more rare in the country's banks, brokerage houses and insurance companies. Since 2000, the number of women between the ages of 20 and 35 working in finance has dropped by 315,000, or 16.5%, while the number of men in that age range grew by 93,000, or 7.3%.
This is an issue that requires further examination, perhaps by the SEC. Congress required the SEC to set up an Office of Office of Minority and Women Inclusion. Among other things, the Office has responsibility for "assessing the diversity policies and practices of entities regulated by the agency." Examining the reasons for this reduction in diversity ought to be one of the first projects undertaken by this Office once its up and running.
